The following is a press release used in the Sheboygan Press, September 2004: A new veterans organization in the Sheboygan area has recently attained national chapter status. Sheboygan Veterans for Peace, is a group dedicated to the abolition of war as an instrument of foreign policy. Last month this fledgling group was officially welcomed to the ranks of the national organization, headquartered in St. Louis, MO. When in its forming stage, this group has kept busy raising funds for People to People (student exchange program), brought peace and justice speakers to Mead Public Library, and participated in Veteran's Day and Memorial Day ceremonies. Dedicated to raising public awareness to the devastating nature of industrialized warfare, they marked the first anniversary of the current Iraq war by turning Fountain Park into a military cemetery, marking each of the then 570 U.S. fatalities with a candle luminary as well as mourning for those Iraqis killed by the war. The new chapter plans on honoring a Lakeland College graduate and veteran, the late Jim Baughman, naming the post in his memory. Future plans include members taking part in a large protest of the School of the Americas at Ft. Benning, GA, a controversial institution accused of endorsing criminal behavior. Chapter 114 of Veterans for Peace meets every third Tuesday of the month at First Congregational UCC, 3rd and Bluff in Sheboygan. It is comprised of male and female veterans from World War II thru Desert Storm, and welcomes peacetime vets as well as non-veteran associates.
